Nicknames!

Nicknames! Where do they come from, why do they happen? Many people in the area of Dawson had, or have nicknames. Some had a reason, some, no one knows why or how! Many of the people are known by no other name than their nickname. Surely Dawson and the area around had its share. Here are some that are known quite will and no doubt some have been missed. Please do not feel badly if yours is one that has been missed.

Dan C. Riley, "Eggs"; Hugh Riley, "Count"; James Riley, "Stem"; James McGuier, "Conjie"; Harry Ulmer, "Slits"; Emerson Heim, "Teddy"; Gilbert Hogue, "Jig"; Harlan Heim, "Wheat"; Linden Heim, "Jonah"; Chester Duryea, "Pee Wee"; Cecil P Duryea, "Crip"; Tom F. Ryan, "Sheenie"; Tom M. Ryan, "Waxie"; Thomas Ryan, "Spoon"; Bernard Riley, "Duffer"; Lloyd Heim, "Strutt"; Orville Wuster, "Delger"; Richard Heim "John D."; Milton Wuster, "Guinea"; Arlo Coons, "Coonie"; Juanita Bodkins, "Skeeter"; Paul Lyons, "Tige"; Elmer Thacker, "Tuggle"; Ester Barlow, "Babe"; Florence Barlow, "Sweetie"; Ethel Barlow, "Ehpie"; Harry Hummel, "Had"; Frances Barlow, "Frant"; Lee Bacon, "Turkey"; Roy Masonbrink, "Andy"; Wesley Heim, "Pix"; Paul Heim, "Solly"; Price Walker, "Dinger"; Nelson Ulmer, "Nelly"; Henry Georgi, "Smox", Charles M. C.ancy, "Sug" or "Charley".

I once heard a quotation given and cannot remember the author, but do recall what he said, "Anyone known by a nickname has many, many friends." This certainly must be true of all these listed as many are remembered even today, long after some have moved away or are no longer living.

The above article was written in 1976 by Elma Heim Griffith, for the Dawson Bicentennial Celebration.
