Cindy Callaway likes to add a little color to NSAA activities.
Among her many duties as an NSAA administrative assistant, Callaway
is responsible for making the four-color tournament brackets that
are displayed at the state tournament sites and the scoreboards
at state golf.
"The brackets and result sheets, especially for tournaments
like golf, look so colorful. It adds a touch of class," says
Callaway.
Callaway thought she would be spending her working career as a
special education teacher. After graduating from the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln, she accepted a teaching position in Hiawatha,
Kansas. After the 1993-94 school year, she returned to Lincoln to
improve her computer skills. "I came back to Lincoln to gain
more knowledge in computers, so I took computer classes at Lincoln
School of Commerce," explained Callaway. "I knew I wanted
to be working around kids, but I never expected to be working for
the NSAA."
In the summer of 1995, Callaway was hired as the Association's
receptionist and assistant to NSAA Association Director Debra Velder.
Callaway also began helping former NSAA Assistant Director Conde
Sargent with some publications. "I saw what Conde was doing
with the programs and pretty soon I was helping put together the
golf and tennis programs. I just love doing that type of work,"
said Callaway.
Callaway's involvement with NSAA publications has grown ever since.
She does all the layout work for the NSAA Record Book, School Directory,
and the NSAA pocket, wall and desk calendars -a process she starts
in January. "It's a whole different mind-set compared to putting
together a state championship, like play production," said
Callaway, who serves as the staff assistant for boys and girls tennis,
volleyball, swimming, speech, debate, and play production. "The
accuracy has to be there because I understand how important those
calendar dates are to administrators."
NSAA Executive Director Jim Tenopir believes Callaway is a "can-do"
type of person. "If there is something we need done, Cindy
is not afraid to tackle the job," said Tenopir. "Cindy
has some very diverse talent and skills. She has adapted very well
to the computer applications we've asked her to be involved with
and she has a pleasant personality that really fits in well with
the entire office staff."
Callaway enjoys working with the state tournaments and people
involved in Nebraska high school activities. She knows what she
does benefits students across the state. Her latest task has been
helping to develop and modify Power Point presentations for NSAA
Rules Meetings. "Every year it seems like we put a new twist
to things to make it that much better," said Callaway.
Cindy Williamson Callaway, the daughter of Bob and Phyllis Williamson
of Dawson, Nebraska
is married to Scott Callaway and has two
sons, Jacob, age 5 and Josh age 2. They make their home in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
