Your Heritage - The Museum Project - Pennsylvania Historical Society of Nebraska

Your Heritage ...
by Robert Williamson 3/2002

All of us who are of Pennsylvania German heritage have the opportunity of a lifetime! The history of our forefathers begs to be preserved and we have now a real opportunity to do just that. It takes a building, some real estate, some dedicated people, and the cooperation of all of YOU to make the dream of Pennsylvania Colony of Nebraska Museum come to life. It will be a project, I am sure, of several generations. Those of our generation who have dreamed this dream are very excited about the current situation and solicit your support.

Lloyd and Donna Heim Epley of Coralville, Iowa have offered us a chance to get things started. For a price of $10,000 or less (if assessed for less), we can purchase the house and two acres of property known commonly in this area as the Ron and Carolee Heim home. There are other articles in this newsletter of the history of this farmstead and how it was owned by several of the people who came from Pennsylvania to farm and to raise their families north of Dawson, Nebraska.

To make the site attractive to the Colony it will take money and work and time. It is with great expectations we lay this proposal out to you for your consideration.

It is my personal dream to develop this site over a period of years into a place of history, a place to store artifacts, to hold picnics, and to have available for persons of the Colony to visit through the years. It is my dream to develop this into a site so attractive that many people out- side the family who are interested in German immigrant history will want to come and enjoy it. In order to be eligible for grant money and other assistance that is avail- able for such purposes, we must first have the following:

1. An organization, with a name, and with officers, meeting regularly.
… WE HAVE THAT!
2. A 501c listing with the IRS, current and in force, with the legal ability to accept gifts.
...WE HAVE THAT!
3. A design ...a plan ...of what we want. …where we want to go ...and how we plan to get there.
...for these, WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

As each day slips by, and time rolls on, artifacts of our ancestry leave us and will be difficult to recover. We already have a large group of things 'given to us for consideration to be placed in a museum. These things are stored in my business building. Probably most importantly, the young people of today will take time out of their busy lives to come and enjoy a site that is properly prepared with the needed facilities. If made attractive enough, many clubs and organizations from the areas of Omaha, Lincoln, St. Joseph, and Topeka can enjoy a bus tour of such a site.

Come join our dream! Be apart of it with your talents, energy, suggestions, and ideas. …and most importantly, with your financial support. The nest egg you help us build can hatch into a huge success with government grants and state and national governmental help. Now is the time.

...YOU are the ones ----together we can make this dream come true! ! !
